Yard Smart helps Texas grocery giant H-E-B streamline its yardsYard Management has always been a major business focus for H-E-B Grocers of San Antonio, Texas. So much so that they developed their own YMS system in the early 90s. Managing the arrivals, departures, loading, unloading and all the trailer moves in the 150-acre facility had become an overwhelming challenge. With 4 separate campuses on the facility and 25 or more drivers servicing 600 dock doors and making 2,000 trailer moves a day, you can imagine the scope of the task at hand. The challengeThe core elements of the challenge on this project were to replace an operating mission-critical system with a new system that would automate many more of the routine functions while also providing improved overall performance and reducing yard costs. What could be easier – improve efficiency, reduce costs and do it all seamlessly so there is no loss of productivity during the transition! The resultThe Yard Smart deployment at H-E-B proved that a full-featured YMS system will save money and improve performance. But it also showed that a YMS can have important impacts beyond the yard. Yard Smart replaced the legacy system without any service failures. It is fully integrated to H-E-B’s order-management and transportation-management systems. This allowed H-E-B to automate 75 percent of trailer moves, up 25 percent. The system has also allowed a 30 percent increase in the overall number of transactions handled each week, speeded up gate throughput, and allowed H-E-B to attain a 99 percent service level to all stores.
